The Little School Offers the Child an Environment Conducive to Learning

At The Little School, our approach to early learning is guided by Ontario’s How Does Learning Happen? We believe that children learn best through play, exploration, and inquiry in an environment where they feel safe, supported, and valued.

We foster a strong sense of belonging by building responsive, respectful relationships and inclusive environments. Children’s well-being is supported through nurturing care, emotional security, and opportunities to develop independence. Through play and exploration, children remain actively engaged in their learning, and are encouraged to communicate their ideas and creativity through many forms of expression.

Educators observe and respond to each child’s interests and strengths, supporting learning at an individual pace through a balance of child-led play and meaningful group experiences.

Each day, children are invited to explore a variety of toys, materials, and play experiences based on shared interests. During free play, children choose what they want to play with, how they want to play, and who they want to play with.

Circle time brings children and educators together to talk, listen, and share ideas. Educators offer gentle guidance and suggestions, while children are always free to choose how they participate.

Throughout the day, we encourage kindness, respect, and clear communication, helping children feel safe, confident, and supported as they learn through play.

Six Major Areas of The Little School

N

Physical Play Area (physical/social play)

N

House Area (role/social play)

N

Blocks Area (creative/cognitive play/gross motor co-ordination)

N

Arts Area (creative/fine co-ordination)

N

Nature Area (understanding of the natural environment/respect for living things)

N

Quiet Area (quiet/retreat/cognitive play)

Each of these areas offers children a variety of play experiences that support the development of different skills at their own pace.

Children’s growth and learning are observed on an ongoing basis, and families are kept informed of their child’s achievements as well as any areas where additional support at home may be helpful.

We believe that parents are essential partners in a child’s learning journey. Family interest, involvement, and participation are valued and encouraged. Whenever possible, The Little School works in collaboration with families to offer opportunities that bring parents and educators together, strengthening learning experiences and supporting children’s overall development.
