The Little School

Historical Perspective

Little School Childcare Centre for Integral Child Development Since 1985

Elsa and Enrique Roman founded The Little School Centre for Integral Child Development in 1985. It started with a total capacity of 16 preschoolers and was located on Gerald St. in Cumberland. The School’s strong emphasis on its program’s educational contents became the Centre’s trademark from the beginning.

The Little School moved in September of ’88 to its new custom-designed facilities in the Taylor Creek Business Park with a licensed capacity of 45 children. Shortly after, the licensed capacity was increased to 65 children distributed in four programs: Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Kindergarten.

The Little School became a non-profit organization in 1989 and receives funding from the City of Ottawa and the Ontario Ministry of Education.

Its continued success prompted a further expansion that took place during the summer of 1992. During the summer of 1993, we enhanced our Infant program by dividing it into Infants and Junior Toddlers and later on, the Kindergarten program was divided into Junior and Senior. In this way, the children’s needs are met in a much better way.

The Little School is licensed for a total capacity of 95 children, distributed in six different programs as follows:

Infants

0 months – 18 months

Jr. Toddlers

18 months – 24 months

Sr. Toddlers

2 years old

Jr. Preschoolers

3 years old

Sr. Preschoolers

4 years old

Kindergarten

5 years old

In addition to the Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers programs, The Little School also offers full-day Kindergarten, and a large selection of full time and part time options designed to suit the specific and varied needs of parents.

After 35 years of its foundation, The Little School is already established and recognized as an important part of the academic community of the Ottawa-Carleton Region. It has earned its reputation in the education and care of young children thanks to the work and dedication of the 26 permanent staff that strive to maintain their programming objectives every day.

The Little School is one of the preferred childcare centres used by Algonquin College, La Cite Collegial and similar institutions for student field placements and Co-Ed programs.

The Little School is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of parents of children attending the daycare and community members.
